Military Rape Victims Access to Insurance Coverage for Abortion Services

The U.S. Senate, in a bipartisan vote, has passed a law extending insurance coverage for abortion to victims of rape in the military. For years now, women service members have had to pay for the abortion themselves. One woman said she kept the assaults quiet because she was “trained to believe soldiers are not allowed to feel or behave like victims.”

There is no shame in a military member asking for and getting the help they need, either for physical or emotional trauma.

This is an historic change in policy affording our brave women the respect and support they deserve. Rape should not be seen as an “occupational hazard” for military members.  Watch an explanation of this new law and hear stories from female service members here.
